Long Island Beach Festival, September 10, 2005
Challenge:
The Nature Conservancy asked The Event Company to create awareness for their beach conservation efforts.
Solution:
The Event Company created The Long Island Beach Festival, a family event held at beautiful Smith Point Beach. The Long Island Beach Festival offered exciting educational activities related to understanding and enjoying Long Island's beaches. There was live music, sand castle building workshops, kite flying demonstrations, an Ultimate Frisbee Tournament, Puppet Shows and much more. A keynote address by Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, a.k.a. “Dr. Beach,” inspired visitors to enjoy the wonders of the coastline and its surrounding habitats. Sayville resident Tom Westman, winner of the CBS hit series “Survivor, Palau,” signed autographs and talked about why he loves Long Island's beaches.
Educational displays offered tips on what people can do to make sure our oceans, beaches and bays stay healthy, clean, and enjoyable. Expert naturalists were available to answer questions about the beaches.
Results:
Over 8,000 people attended and all had a great time and most importantly they
became aware of The Nature Conservancy's beach conservation initiatives and
learned what they as individuals can do to help. The Nature Conservancy was
able to build a database for a mailing list and build a constituency to support
their efforts.
